There are tall, rectangular recycling bins conveniently located throughout campus for paper and cardboard. The short, round bins are for glass bottles, metal cans, caps and foils, and plastic bottles or cups. These are available in each café, as well as several loading docks, areas near vending machines, main offices, and study lounges.

No. WMU does not have a large shredder, but there are document destruction firms with reasonable prices. See phone book or call Recycling & Waste Reduction Services at 387-8165 for more information. Anything that is sensitive-exams, social security numbers, personnel files, etc.-must be shredded.
Yes, it is. Please place all shredded materials in a clear plastic bag. Put the bagged shredding next to a paper recycling bin, or in the dumpster for paper and cardboard. Black bags are not recyclable because the contents MUST be visible, otherwise it is assumed to be trash. Please note that cross-cut shredding may be required for sensitive materials, so consult current regulations to find out up to date information.
Contamination, in the recycling industry, means any material placed in a recycling container that is not specifically accepted as recyclable in that program. Contaminants can be anything from cans in the paper recycling to half empty bottles in the bottle recycling, to food waste or general garbage. If there is an excessive amount of contamination, the contents of the dumpster or bin must be emptied as trash. Please make an effort to place the correct materials in all bins and dumpsters on campus.
Curbside service is available for all single family dwellings or rental properties with 4 or fewer units in the city of Kalamazoo. Many apartment complexes also provide recycling. There are several places for you to take your recyclables in Kalamazoo County. To find the facility nearest you, please contact your local city or township clerk's office.
For all recycling bins, except those in residence halls or apartments and desk side paper bins, call Recycling & Waste Reduction Services at 387-8165. Residents of campus apartments and residence halls are responsible for removing all trash and recycling from their rooms to the dumpsters outside.
