Environmental Standards

Emisions from the WMU Power Plant presently fall under the
guidelines of two permits both issued by the State of Michigan
Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). The first permit
is a renewable operating permit governing all air emissions for
the Power Plant as well as the entire campus. The second permit
is a General Site Permit governing storm water drainage on the
site and discharges into the storm system on site.
The renewable operating permit issued to the Power PLant is part
of the overall Title V air emissions program administered by
Michigan DEQ - Air Quality Division.
The permit number is MI-ROP-K2131-2004a.
Source Registration Number (SRN) is K2131.
This renewable operating permit is on a 5 (five) year cycle and
went into effect 11/22/2004 and is scheduled to expire 11/22/2009.
This permit allows the burning of both coal and natural gas in the
Power Plant under certain conditions and limitations as defined in
the permit.
This permit can be viewed in its entirety through accessing the State
of Michigan DEQ website through the following html address:

The site storm water permit issued to the Power Plant is administered
by the Michigan DEQ - Surface Water Quality Division. This permit
authorizes the WMU Power Plant to discharge an unspecified amount of
storm water which meeter the criteria established in General Permit
No. MIS - 110000 for storm water from industrial activity - cycle
year 1 watershed.
The specified permit coverage number is MIS - 110729 and is presently
scheduled to expire on April 1, 2011.
Though not issued in a specific permit format, the wastewater discharge
from the Power Plant falls under the criteria established by the City
of Kalamazoo Wastewater Reclamation Department. This department has
established specific wastewater discharge limitations on pH and
temperature, in addition to metals content with which WMU must comply.
