Wherever possible, Western Michigan University has replaced all screw-type incandescent bulbs ranging from 40 watts up to 300 watts with Compact Florescent Lamps [CFL]. The CFL's range from 13 watts to 68 watts. The energy cost savings to the university are approximately $150,000 per year. The conversion to CFL has other benefits as well:
The difference in cost per bulb from incandescent to CFL results in a total annual savings of approximately $30,000.
Because of the extended bulb life of a CFL, maintenance replacement costs are reduced generating a savings of approximately $254,000 annually
